Story Behind The Song
Soon after graduating art school in March 1984 - I began to assemble some of the new technology of the time for composing. Some of my music friends continued to help on this path with their mentorship and performances. This one was a solo production. This song was done in my basement kitchen soon after I set up my first midi studio. Fitler SQ. Philadelphia. I loved the flexibility and new tech coolness of laying down a base track with drums and experimenting with different layered synth sounds. Gear: Tascam Cassette 4 track, CX5M Music Computer, Korg Poly 800, Yamaha RX15 drum machine.
I had always suffered from SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder. This was my ode to that, and the wonderful images of many birds in flight. This was a typical scene along The Schuylkill River on East River Drive.

Lyrics
Birds On The Wing © 1984 recording artist Douglas Branson, rat tale records 3:21
Written and performed and produced December 1984.
Birds On The Wing flying to the South for winter
Squadrons of geese in their great formations
shadows in the sky
shadows passing by
If I could fly south I'd leave tomorrow
borrow some wings, leave this sorrow
leave on the morrow, leave tomorrow
The great migrations
the running of the deer
Birds On The Wing flying to the South for winter
Birds On The Wing flying to the South for winter
The great migrations
the running of the deer
great legions flying across the sky
a bear curled up in his cave in slumber sleeping for the winter
unaware of the outside world passing him by.
