Lyrics
Last night I tried to call you but you weren?t home.
And the guy on the other end of the line got punchy and told me his girl don?t take call from strangers.
So I hung up the phone and I sat there in the dark for quite a while
Remembering you with your cover girl smile
and I dreamed of what might have been if I?d just been around
Instead of out out playing in whistlestop towns
Now my coffee?s gone cold and the waitress is ignoring me
And she's making small talk with a computer salesman from upstate.
And back of the bar I see a stranger?s face looking out from the mirror
And the waitress finally comes down, and she looks me over
And says...hey, you?re the guy that sung those songs
And I said yeah that?s me and lit up like a lampost
She said I remember seeing you on the television
Well I was never on the television, but I couldn?t say no
So I just gave her my best weary smile and I said again... Yeah that?s me.
Then she asked me to sing so I pulled out my old guitar and started right in on it
And it was going okay but pretty soon the joint was talkin over the top of me
so I packed up that old guitar and headed for the door
And as pushed out into the night I heard that salesman say
That ain?t the guy... that?s just some bum who never was nothing.
So I crossed that parking lot prarie and I pissed in the tank of his dinky little toyota
And I wondered how many miles to the gallon he?d get for that
And if it would get him home to his wife and his cat...
Well you know, that kinda guy... he?s bound to have one
Then I turned and I headed for the bus depot
And as the sun came up across the desert
I headed out once more into the valley of lost dreams.....
