Billy took a job with Pony Express carrying the mail
Got a mustang and mochila riding east along the trail
Was a lonely stretch of country, from Fallon to Ely
Where the summer sun bakes the earth until she turns bone dry
CHORUS
A thousand miles from Clarksville he's a young man with a past
Trying hard to understand how life can turn so fast
A thousand thoughts of Clarksville of a bullet and that gun
A righteous shot but that don't stop the nightmares when they come, and they come.........................yeah and they come
Five years in the saddle tends to wear on a body's bones
He took a break from riding ponies built himself a home
The more he tries to change his life the harder that it gets
There's no peace in Ely cause Billy can't forget
CHORUS
A thousand miles from Clarksville he's a young man with a past
Trying hard to understand how life can turn so fast
A thousand thoughts of Clarksville of a bullet and that gun
A righteous shot but that don't stop the nightmares when they come
Bridge
Back home in Clarksville oh they still call him kid
Forgetting who he really is but never what he did
They made him out to be much more than he ever wanted to be
And he remembers telling them no way that's not me
CHORUS
A thousand miles from Clarksville he's a young man with a past
Trying hard to understand how life can turn so fast
A thousand thoughts of Clarksville of a bullet and that gun
A righteous shot but that don't stop the nightmares when they come
A thousand yeah a thousand a thousand miles away, yes a thousand.
