Story Behind The Song
Skip was a rope horse, belonging to my co-writer Hiram. They bought him for their son, Austin, to rope from, and they were very successful. Over the years Skip was a trail horse and a lesson horse. When I started riding more, he was the one I learned on. In October of this year, Skip passed away, at the age of 30.

Lyrics
He was a big palomino with a beautiful head
His eye was kind as his heart
He loved our son who loved him right back
No better team from the start
A rope horse he was, heading with our boy
Each run better than the last
A rope horse he was, heading with our boy
The good ones, they go so fast
He would run and he'd turn as our boy grew and learned
His timing never too slow
And when Austin was ready he'd place him just so
A perfect rope easy to throw
A rope horse he was, heading with our boy
Each run better than the last
A rope horse he was, heading with our boy
The good ones, they go so fast
He did it all, calf roping to trail
He loved his job, did it well
With patience and skill he taught us all
For the small ones he did his best
A rope horse he was, heading with our boy
Each run better than the last
A rope horse he was, heading with our boy
The good ones are gone too fast
We loved him so and I'm sure that he waits
For us all at those beautiful gates
