In the literal sense, the chorus tells the story of a person drowning as he is looking up and sinking watching the sunset through the water. The verses talk about a person waking up to an "empty pillow" and a note which makes him believe his love has left him. In his confused emotional state he "sets a cry for help" implying he's going to commit suicide, hoping his lost love will come save him before it's too late. Ultimately, she searches for him but doesn't find him, as he holds out hope until his last breath.
