Story Behind The Song
My wife and I were having some struggles in the relationship. We were simultaneously committed to one another while feeling at a loss about what to do, how to move forward, how to get unstuck. This song came out of that tension between caring about eachother but not having a clue as to how to handle the damage - so, we resorted to sarcasm and half-assed conversation for a while.
Song Description
This is about reaching a point within the relationship where two people are at the precipice of giving up on it. But, they still interact with one another in a cynical way. And, ironically, their shared sense of cynicism, sarcasm and mutual failure enables them to continue dialogue - providing hope for the relationship.

Lyrics
It's 6am
and I realize
I'm sitting here all alone.
A coffee cup
and my weary eyes
in a cold and lonely home.
I hear your feet on the floor
as you sullenly walk to the door,
and I ask you...
I said, "Do you hate me?"
You said, "Baby, just your guts.
Do you miss me?"
I said, "Only
when you're here."
You trusted me
for all your needs.
But, my mind was on one track.
We all know
that I did the deed.
I can never take it back.
I hear your feet on the floor
as you sullenly walk to the door,
and I ask you...
I said, "Do you hate me?"
You said, "Baby, just your guts.
Do you miss me?"
I said, "Only
when you're here."
If a fire could be a woman,
you'd be inferno to my flame.
Beggars never can be choosers.
And, I've got nothing to my name.
I said, "Do you hate me?"
You said, "Baby, just your guts.
Do you miss me?"
I said, "Only
when you're here."
Only when you're here.
Only when you're here.
