You Got The Keys To My Heart © (was #1 Broadjam: Bluegrass)

Song Description

"Taxi To Tonganoxie", is the only CD of Chet Nichols' music that features full back-up bands in the studio. The material on this CD was recorded, engineered and co-produced by Stephen Barncard in two different studios back in the early and mid 1970's. The songs, "Paper Burns" and "You Were They And They Were You" were recorded at Wally Heider's studio in San Francisco. The other tunes were recorded at Stephen Barncard's home in the hills above Beverly Glen in Los Angeles. The back-up band at the Beverly Glen location consisted of a fabulous group of artists: Laura Allan (Laura Allen)- vocals, Fuzzy Oxendine - drums (Sons, Grape, Jerry Miller Band, etc), Wayne Goodwyn on Fiddle, lap steel (Emmylou), Ricky Wallace, Estrella Berosini - vocals and Billy Berosini - bass (Jackson Browne, Brewer & Shipley). Chet played acoustic guitar, dulcimer, electric guitar and piano. Even Stephen got in on the act and made an appearance playing bass! The Heider sessions consisted of Buddy Cage - pedal steel guitar (New Riders of The Purple Sage), Pete Sears - bass (New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Jefferson Starship) and Spenser Dryden - drums (The Airplane, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage). Even though this collection of tunes is almost 35 years old, people are still discovering it, enjoying it and sharing it.

VERSE 1.
When I'm feeling down
You know how to cure my ways
Take me behind the barn
And roll me in the hay

CHORUS:
You got the keys to my heart
You got the keys to my heart
Some women (men) know what to do
And some don't cut the cake
But, you got the keys to my heart

VERSE 2.
When I feel abused
You know how to patch me up
Dress me in my old overalls
And take me crusin' in your pick-up truck

REPEAT CHORUS:

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

VERSE 3.
When I'm feeling mean
You know just what to do
Take off my boots and my Stetson hat
And throw me in your swimming pool

REPEAT CHORUS

almost a bluegrass feel nicely done

Fiddle was awesome, the music is well put together, and catchy, Needs a little work on the lyrics. all in all. great song. instrumental was spot on.

Great old time corn pone well played and performed being lead by the fiddle.

Love the energy out of the gate. Very good and gets me right into the track. I sit up and pay attention. The chorus is memorable and singable. You won't forget it. Like the "cut the cake" line.
Easy to know exactly what the song is about quickly so I can concentrate of the tune and not "What's this about?" Nice track.

NICE MELODIC COUNTRY TUNE, WILLY NELSON, INSTRUMENTS AND VOCAL NICELY DONE,
I REAL PRECIATE YOUR STYLE HOW YOU DID THAT SONG, SOUNDS VERY ORIGINAL LOTS OF DYNAMIC ACUSTIC INSTRUMENTS, VIOLIN, GUITAR ETC, NICE AWAKE VOICE, ALSO THE DRUMS WERE TOGETHER REALY NICLY MADE WITH THE BASS. THANX 4 YOUR SHARINGS - BEST SUCCESS

Really great musicianship on this track. The performances are excellent and you can tell all the performers are seasoned and skilled. The timing is spot on. Keeping a train rhythm on the snare at a medium BPM consistent for a long time is not an easy task. The vocals background and lead sit really well. Also the guitar and violin riffs and licks are great!

Had me from the intro!! Very catchy lyrics, great blend of vocals & instruments; really enjoyed the bridge.

Wow, this is a solid performance from start to finish. Love that locomotion feel with the bluegrass beat and country fiddle. The mix of vocals is very nice...love the lead singer's delivery, pitch and sound. The backing vocals really add a nice pad to the arrangement. The hook is memorable and rock solid. There are a couple of bluegrass stations I listen to and I could see this one easily making the cut to be in the rotation.

It had a fun country vibe to it. Nice work.

Love this bluegrass song from the word go. Great up-tempo feel with energy, great movement, and love the fiddle work. Especially like the little fiddle lines in between the vocal sections. The chorus is memorable, the verses build nicely into the chorus. Great job by all here!

I love it - this got my blood pumping this morning! Everything is very well done. The music, vocals the recording are excellent. A enjoyable song I could listen to again. Great job all around!

I liked it so much I am playing it again as i write. I don't know if this is by the same composer I just reviewed previously, but I told him the same thing I will tell you....I like the authentic feel to this song, along with its analog/record-like sound. I like that it isn't overproduced. I feel like I am in the studio with you guys (I wish). The vocals were perfect for the recording, and the instrumentation was awesome. talented band! Glad the fiddle got a little time to shine. Your hook was solid, and I was singing along by the third chorus fully. Wish you all lived around here. We don't get much good country/bluegrass here outside Philly, except for the Philadelphia Folk Festival. You should come....even apply for next year. Best of Luck... Annie Lynn

What Fun! Love that fiddle! Great instrumentation.

Fun Bluegrass tune. Sounds like a bunch of good ole boys on the front porch of a log cabin! Enjoyed the humor

Nice energetic instrumental intro sets up nicely for the song. Your lyric writing cracks me up; very original and humorous. Loved your internal rhyme: Funk, skunk. Other lyrics that made me laugh: Crack an egg on my head, throw me in the swimming pool, roll me in the hay, dress me in my overalls, cruise in the pickup...these are all great word pictures that make for a great song! Tight band, great fiddler. Let me know if you ever play a festival in NE Florida!

SASSY, JAMMIN' LITTLE TUNE that really kicks. witty lyrically. Well played and sung. Nice recording.
