Lyrics
A Place to Belong
Jenny is done with her Christmas dinner,
she?s staring off into space;
Grandpa isn?t anywhere near finished,
and Mama is making them wait;
Uncle Stan?s sitting beside her,
he got his divorce in the fall,
he used to be such a kidder
now he says nothing at all,
He?s come to
Chorus:
Father and mother, sisters and brothers,
Children who share in a name;
We know they?re not perfect
they help and they hurt us
and we know we do the same,
But still we turn at the holiday time
to the ones who have known us so long,
to stop for awhile
get warm by the fire
?cause we need a place to belong.
Grandpa?s interrupting the conversation,
shouting his tales of the war,
and how faith got him through the Great Depression,
Jenny?s heard it all before;
she doesn?t yet understand it
she wishes she were somewhere else,
But someday these stories from Grandpa
will be a source of strength in herself,
part of
(repeat chorus)
Uncle Stan?s talking real soft to Mama
Jenny sees tears in his eyes
then Mama?s arms reach out to hold him
covering him as he cries.
Jenny will someday remember
when she?s fighting those wars of her own,
when it?s a cold, chill December
Jenny will think about home,
and her (repeat chorus)
