Texas on Fire

Story Behind The Song

In the summer of 2011, multiple large wildfires broke out in Bastrop, Magnolia, Leander and south Austin, Texas and ranged on unchecked.

Song Description

Our daughter was in Leander and my wife's sister was in Magnolia - evacuating and dodging the fires. I wrote it to remember this event.

Lyrics

Texas on Fire

Fire, see the white smoke turn to black
Fire, someone's house was in its path
Soon, soon the flames will crest the hill
Soon, in spite of us you know they will

Texas on fire and there's nothing we can do
Texas on fire, guess its up to me and you

Listen, hear the popping up the road
Listen, that damned mesquite will just explode
Feel it, feel the heat come pressing in
Feel it, raising blisters on your skin

Texas on fire ...

(break)
If the wind would only die down,
we could get ahead of this
And if we can doze this brush down,
we just might get those backfires lit ...

(lead)

Texas on fire, we will surely find a way
Texas on fire, we will beat those flames today
