Exit 44 (br)

Story Behind The Song

Exit 44 is on I55 south, on my way to family. I always knew I would use it for a title. One day I started writing verses about a lost love, and I couldn't stop. I then decided to call it Exit 44. I wrote about 12 verses in all. I shortened it to six

Lyrics

Here I sit between two mirrors
And they show me from where I came
My heart sings like an arrow
And the highway is where I aim
It's been three years since I left you
But I never let you go
Now I'm lost upon this freeway
In a beam of broken souls
And the harvest fields remind me why my thoughts of you are torn.
Highway sign says 59 miles to exit 44

Thought I saw you by a rest stop
Made my heart jump up and dance
It's been many years looking for you
Waitin for this chance
As I gather up my courage
Please release me from my cage
Try to find my book of speeches
And I open to your page
But as I ran out to meet you
You left me all alone once more
Eager smile goes silent down on exit 44

Cross beside the highway no one quite remembers why
Sun fades plastic flowers
Where someone must've died
Now I sometimes see the blood
Sometimes I feel the rain
But rain can't wash away what happened here that day

It's too late to wish I was stronger
I'm just a pilgram on his way
The lonely bell rings to the sun
As it mourns the dyin day
Through the valley of the echo
Make a wish that melts the heart
2 setting suns remind us
Of how we were torn apart
And this day will never dawn again
On blue eyes as bright as yours
Cast a lasting shadow down on exit 44

Weathered note inside my pocket that you wrote me years before
I won't read it, I can never close that door
You will always be 17 all aglow in loves first flame
The dream is over, but the passion still remains

Now the future falls between us
A forbidden wall of stone
And the only key to its massive gate
Has been broken long ago
To my heart you're still an angel
To my mind you're still a star
But those dotted lines between us
Who we were from who we are
And the joke is on the universe,
I'm invisible once more
Living always finds a way on exit 44
