(BALLAD OF) WOUNDED EGO
(chorus)"Dance Wounded Ego!Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego!Dance, Dance, Dance!
Dance Wounded Ego!Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego!Dance! Dance! Dance!
"How long will our people wait for rain"
Wounded Ego ask Chief Calla?
"Be patient" he answer, "Great Father will send us
Much refreshment when his wisdom says it is time."
"Aaah!", Wounded Ego sneer, "ever since missionaries
Tell our people of Innocent One, no one dance
To desert gods to bring rain."
"My son", Chief Calla say, Innocent One suffer much
To take away our shame, and to show our people
One true God, who make desert and rain.
He will send us rain at the right time."
"Aaah!", Wounded Ego scoff again, "Now Wounded Ego
Go to desert gods and dance to bring rain."
And so the people make a poem......
"Dance Wounded Ego! Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego! Dance, Dance, Dance!
Dance Wounded Ego! Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego! Dance, Dance, Dance!"
Wounded Ego sit and sulk many moon
Alone in hot Mojave desert.
No rain to fall to cool fiery tongue
And sand burn feet very much.
Scout comes to Wounded Ego with news
Of new stream from Great White Father
That runs in village,
But Wounded Ego no listen to scout.
"Aaah!, no trouble Wounded Ego with crooked talk.
Wounded Ego dance to desert gods to bring rain.
Big rain dance.
People say rain come from Great White Father,
But speak with forked tongue!"
When Wounded Ego no see rain in many moons,
And feet raw from dancing in hot sand, he thinks:
"Maybe there really has come new stream in village
to quench fiery tongues; I'd better drink from it
before I die!"
But then he thinks:
"Everyone will laugh much that Wounded Ego dance
And no bring rain!"
But then he thinks:
"If I don't get water soon,
I will go to Happy Hunting Grounds
Before the season opens!"
"Dance Wounded Ego!Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego!Dance, Dance, Dance!
Dance Wounded Ego!Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego!Dance, Dance, Dance!"
Back at the village, Wounded Ego found it was true;
The people drank freely
From the stream that ran in village.
He sees Chief Calla with cup in hand
Held out to him.
"My son, you've come home! Come, drink of the water
God has supplied", the Chief offered.
Wounded Ego did not sneer.
He took the cup and drank it all.
He felt new life in his dry parched mouth.
He thought of how proud he'd been
To dance to the desert gods,
And not to wait for the Innocent One.
When the Chief gave him the second cup,
Something most strange happened.
He poured the water on his own head]
And began to dance!
"Why are you dancing my son?
Do you dance to desert gods again to bring rain?"
"Aaah!", Wounded Ego answer,
"Desert gods no bring rain!
Water from the Great White Father bring rain in heart,
And dance to Wounded Ego feet!"
And so all of the village began to dance
With Wounded Ego, while the heavens began to pour!
And the people sang a song......
"Dance Wounded Ego! Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego! Dance, Dance, Dance!
Dance Wounded Ego! Dance Wounded Ego!
Dance Wounded Ego! Dance, Dance, Dance!"
