Ballad For Ray

Story Behind The Song

As a saxophonist, I'm as inspired by singers like Ray Charles and Mahalia Jackson as I am by other great horn players. I wrote the chord progression first and the melody came out kind of easily when I blew over the changes and recorded. It's almost never this easy. I think I was just feeling the mood, and playing it. Ray Charles had recently passed on - although when I sat down to write I had no conscious intention of eulogizing him musically. After this song was done, I felt in it how his singing has influenced and moved me, and that's when I really felt the loss of this great artist.
