Story Behind The Song
The melody came to me when I was in Shanghai while on a year trip around the globe with my wife. I loved Shanghai and can't understand why I came up with this sad tune. I finished the song in Northern Laos while escaping from the baking sun.
Song Description
The song starts as two lovers say goodbye for the final time and in that moment how one reflects on the past 18 years and feels so impotent as his lovers leaves.

Lyrics
Shanghai
Verse 1
In shanghai,
You kissed my cheek and said goodbye.
Beneath a sparkly neon sky.
And as you reached for your hat.
I thought of the time we swore that,
We?d be together ?til we die.
Verse 2
The rain came down.
The town shed tears and we got wet.
This is a place I won?t forget.
It?s funny how some things turn out.
It?s sad swings and dumb roundabouts.
Because Shanghai?s where we first met.
Middle
Sixteen years ago,
It seems such a long time though,
Every single second was so beautiful and pure.
Now I try believing,
That you?ll change your mind and stay,
But you?re leaving,
For sure.
Verse 3
You smiled your last.
And as you walked past it was so weird.
How all the stormy clouds just cleared.
And my eyes followed you,
?Til the crowd swallowed you.
And into Shanghai you disappeared.
