Story Behind The Song
It was 1980 on a frozen winter Sunday afternoon in Toronto Canada. I was reading a story in a magazine about computers. It was the first time that I had come across words like megawatts, wired, microchips, databank and so on -- all on a couple of pages.
Song Description
It's the computer age (1980 perspective) and I don't need to get around, nor do the rest of the boys. We've got the "First World". Not the 3rd or 2nd but "First world calling"

Lyrics
First World Calling
I got a job at the computer factory
exactly what I do has never bothered me
I feel at home with my computerized toys
don't need to get around
nor do the rest of the boys
this ain't no hicktown in some backward state
this ain't no nation that's developing late
oh no oh no this is the first world
First world calling
morning to night
first world calling by satellite
first world calling
loud and clear
first world calling its there and its here
oh no oh no this is the first world
I got my number and I got my rank
on microchip down at the data bank
my head is wired and my brain never tires
I keep my focus on the spectrum of desires
This ain't the 70's dial a blind date
this ain't the party where you turn up late
oh no oh no this is the first world
First world calling
morning to night
first world calling by satellite
first world calling
loud and clear
first world calling its there and its here
oh no oh no this is the first world
We got communication at the speed of light
we've got information of a lasers bite
you can compute it you can dilute it
or turn it all into a ga ga game
this ain't the pony express saddlebag new
this ain't no cotton picker singing the blues
oh no oh no this is the first world
First world calling
morning to night
first world calling by satellite
first world calling
loud and clear
first world calling its there and its here
oh no oh no this is the first world
first world calling
morning to night
first world calling by satellite
