Story Behind The Song
I'd come through a few weeks in which I'd lost a family member to a senseless murder, as well as my job, and my home. I was reeling. After the initial shocks I found myself walking in Central Park in NYC when I was filled with gratitude for the fact that I was still alive and able to pick myself up and keep on going. I looked to the clear blue sky and thanked God and this song came full-blown to me, a present waiting for me to take dictation.

Lyrics
HAVE I THANKED YOU YET TODAY SWEET LORD
HAVE I THANKED YOU YET TODAY SWEET LORD?
FOR THE GIFT THAT IS THIS DAY
?CAUSE I WOKE UP THIS MORNING
WHILE SOME FOLKS SLIPPED AWAY
FOR MY TWO GOOD LEGS THAT CARRY ME
UPON MY MERRY WAY
HAVE I THANKED YOU YET TODAY SWEET LORD
FOR THE GIFT THAT IS THIS DAY?
HAVE I THANKED YOU FOR MY EARS SWEET LORD
TO HEAR WHAT YOU MIGHT SAY?
FOR THE HANDS THAT WROTE THIS SONG DOWN
AND TAUGHT ME HOW TO PLAY
FOR MY VOICE THAT?S FILLED WITH LAUGHTER
TO THRILL ME HERE AND NOW
FOR MY MOUTH THAT STILL REMEMBERS
HOW TO WRAP ITSELF AROUND A SMILE.
SOME MIGHT THINK ME FOOLISH
SEE I?M A SIMPLE MAN TO PLEASE
I TAKE TIME TO SMELL THE FLOWERS
TALK TO THE BIRDS AND BEES
IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER
IT?S HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL
WE ALL WIND UP THE SAME WAY ANYHOW
(SOLO)
SOME MIGHT THINK ME FOOLISH
SEE I?M A SIMPLE MAN TO PLEASE
I TAKE TIME TO SMELL THE FLOWERS
TALK TO THE BIRDS AND BEES
IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER
IT?S HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL
WE ALL WIND UP THE SAME WAY ANYHOW
HAVE I THANKED YOU YET TODAY SWEET LORD
FOR THE GIFT THAT IS THIS DAY
?CAUSE I WOKE UP THIS MORNING
WHILE SOME FOLKS SLIPPED AWAY
AND WHEN ONE DAY THE ANGELS
COME TO TAKE ME OFF TO PLAY
I?LL BE PLEASED TO SHAKE YOUR HAND, SWEET LORD
AND I?LL THANK YOU FOR THAT DAY
