Lyrics

When I was young my daddy died,
we all got dressed in black and everybody cried.
I asked my momma if daddy could see god,
if he could still see the sky beneath that strip of sod.
...and is gettin' buried just like laying down in a big bed,
my momma just looked at me and said....

"You can't see the stars when you're dead,
six feet of dirt and gravel under your head,
it's hard to see the skies when you've got
earthworms crawling through your eyes,
You can't see the stars when you're dead"

As I grew up I made some friends
together we all wondered about life and its end.
So we snuck out to the graveyard
and each laid down on a grave,
wondered if we'd go to hell or if we'd all be saved.
And I said the rising moon
would be a sight from this deathbed,
my friends just looked at me and said...

"You can't see the stars when you're dead,
six feet of dirt and gravel under your head,
it's hard to see the skies when you've got
fungus growing on your eyes,
You can't see the stars when you're dead"

So I went to college and tried to find a clue,
about the universe, what's false and what is true.
I read physics and philosophy and
asked the greatest minds
what will happen when I die, what else will I find?
Will I see the glorious heavens all laid out overhead?
They all just looked at me and said...

"You can't see the stars when you're dead,
six feet of dirt and gravel under your head,
it's hard to see the skies when you've got
daisies growing from your eyes,
You can't see the stars when you're dead"

So when I die I don't want my body buried in the earth,
my ashes sprinkled on the ground for a natural rebirth.
I don't want to have formaldehyde
pumping through my veins,
or laboratory students picking at my brains.
Just strap my body to a fence post in a field instead,
tie down my arms prop up my head.

I'll see the stars when I'm dead,
with just the acid rain falling on my head
and I won't be surprised when maggots hatch in my eyes
and eat their way into my head
cuz' I'll see the stars when I'm dead.
