Your Choice

Story Behind The Song

Over the years, the song has mostly stayed the same lyrics-wise. I've had to update a few lines here and there at times so it wouldn't sound outdated. The melody has definitely evolved from when I first wrote it. The original melody was slow and almost a ballad. Around 2013, I had finally made the conscious decision that traditional R&B wasn't my style and began to play around with what I wanted "Your Choice" to sound like. Since theme is aggressive pursuit and release, I started to look toward electronic and dance music as the direction I wanted to go in. After working with a few producers over some years, I was able to find one (Sebastian) that understood my vision for the song.

Song Description

Your Choice has been a 18-year work-in-progress. I first wrote in 2003 to capture my frustration with guys wanting to continue to play the field rather commit when our feelings are realized only to aggressively pursue me later when they are done getting their fill. The expectation that I was going to just wait for them to pick me is the main point of contention. The message in the song is that them losing their opportunity wasn't my choice, it was theirs the moment they said "not now."

Lyrics

I hear you calling
Calling out to me
I come to see, yea
Come to see what the
Trouble may be

I hear you knocking
Knocking down my door
I thought I told you
Thought I told you I
Don't want you no more
But you had to come 'round
Digging up the ground of my life
I don't want any trouble
Don't want any strife

And you didn't know why
We couldn't try
To build a bond of love
Instead of thinking of
All the girls you may like

You didn't want me... Now
I don't need you, need you no no
Feelings are something not to be argued
Time kept ticking on while you were
Doing your own thang
You can't be mad at me
It was your choice you see

I see you coming
Coming up to me
Can't help but wonder
Wonder why just can't you see

I hear you talking
Telling all your lies
Those games ain't gonna fly
(let me tell you why)
I've moved on to a much better guy

Still you had to come 'round
Digging up the ground of my life
I don't want any trouble
Don't want any strife
And you didn't know why
We couldn't try
To build a bond of love
Instead of thinking of
All the girls you may like

You didn't want me... Now
I don't need you, need you no no
Feelings are something not to be argued
Time kept ticking on while you were
Doing your own thang
You can't be mad at me
It was your choice you see

I'm on to new things and you should be too
(you should be too)
The end for us has already passed due
Did you expect me to wait while you
Filled up you plate and got your dessert too
I need you see you can't be mad at me
It was your choice to do

Still you had to come 'round
Digging up the ground of my life
I don't want any trouble
Don't want any strife
And you didn't know why
We couldn't try
To build a bond of love
Instead of thinking of
All the girls you may like

(you didn't want me no)

You didn't want me... Now
I don't need you, need you no no
Feelings are something not to be argued
Time kept ticking on while you were
Doing your own thang
You can't be mad at me
It was your choice you see
