Lyrics

Somewhere Else

When Joe was 24, just after Christmas with his friends
He took a boat on erie in the middle of the night
The sky turned dark, the waters wound up rougher than expected
And Joe fell in and vanished out of sight.

He cared about his friends and had such visions for the future
He might have changed the world in ways we never can imagine
I didn't know him well but I knew that he was good
If anyone should make it, this guy should

Rachael had been graduated about as long as Joe
And was driving in a car along an icy winter freeway
She lost control; the car flipped over to the other side
Just as a semi took her life away

She didn't have to die. She was so gentle and so pleasant.
There weren't many people who could brighten days like her
I didn't know her well, but she always made me smile
She should have got to stay here for awhile.

Joe and Rachael died within a few months of each other
Within a single winter their bright souls were snatched away
It was always such a comfort to me knowing they were in the world
I don't get that kind of comfort much today

If you're the kind of guy or girl who sits around and wonders
Why God allows these things that go against our need for justice
I have an answer I made up that helps me sleep at night
And if you think it's stupid, that's all right.

I think that when we die we go the place that we're most needed
That death's the quickest way to get from one place to another
And maybe Joe and Rachael had already done their work here
And maybe they were needed somewhere else.
