Laura is traveling on a train to find a life
She?s heading out West in the winter of 1979
And she?s leaving her past behind

When she was a young girl, her mama was not around much
She didn?t have family to show her the way

See back in 1974
She married the manager of the local hardware store
She wasn?t sure if she loved the man
She didn?t think anybody else would have her hand

Sometime later, she got used to being struck down
The old man never gave her much of a chance

But, she never believed she could fly on her own

Laura?s gotta understand that she?s got a choice
But she never knew how to make anybody listen to her voice
And she?s used to being scared

Now one thing Laura had for herself
She could lose her mind in any book pulled off the shelf
And in those books she could really be free
She read about all the people, places in the world to see

One cold night, she woke up from a sun-lit dream
She finally knew she could go on alone (breath on her on)
She packed her clothes and books and quietly she slipped out the door
She finally knew she cold find something more

Laura finally understands that she?s got the choice
She?s finally gonna take the chance and speak out with a stronger voice
And she?s sick of being scared
