Kiss The Ground

Story Behind The Song

Written during the height of the 2020 pandemic this song was written when I was taking some time off and had rented a cabin in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. I could not turn on the TV without seeing the division in our country due to social unrest, the election, and the pandemic. As I took walks to the lake and hiked, I could not help but think about how we are all just humans who essentially want to experience the same peace I was feeling. I wrote the first verse, chorus, and verse and sent it to my songwriting partner. He refined what I wrote and added to the bridge and wrote the second verse. After we got together to work on the arrangement, we recorded Kiss the Ground at Mars studio in Seattle with producer Ken Stringfellow (Posies, REM, Big Star).

Song Description

Kiss The Ground is an optimistic view of the world during the 2020 pandemic. The song tells the listener that no matter what is going on in the world that they should, "throw their worries to the wind and kiss the ground". It is a unifying approach to a time when social unrest and anxiety brought on by the pandemic was on every TV screen. The song's message is that our that we should remember the things that connect us as humans and take a moment to enjoy nature and the simple things in life.

Lyrics

KISS THE GROUND
-----------------------

I can't take it
Worrying about the world out there
When a circle is a square
Will we make it
Is there anywhere left to make it to
Or left for me and you
Calling it crazy insults the insane
Might as well frost our cornflakes with cocaine
Guess we should send every swamp down the drain
But the sun is in the rain

So let's take another breath
Make our own summer
Give our grief a little death
And skip the wake
When a wealth of broken dreams
Has left you in the lost and found
Throw your worries to the wind
And kiss the ground

I can't shake it
The feeling that we could be unified
Like the moon and tide
Remake it
There's still a canvas underneath the paint
Down under what we ain't
Differences made of our colors and clothes
Between our ears is where this culture grows
But we can always re-choose what we chose
And everybody knows

So let's take another step
And hold our lovers
Or let's walk a solo mile
Out to the lake
We've been around the sun a thousand times
Still the fox ain't caught the hound
Let go your suffering
And kiss the ground

The eagle and the firefly
Our laughter soaring through the sky
A lust for life a playful grin
Freedom within

So let's take another breath
Make our own summer
Give our grief a little death
And skip the wake
And though we've failed and though we've cried
Our hands are never bound
So let go your suffering
Throw your worries to the wind
Let the new day begin
And kiss the ground
Yeah fire it up again
And kiss the ground
