The only way I could think of writing about the end of the most intense and meaningful relationship ever to exist was to compare it to the feeling of a storm on its way. When a heavy rain or thunderous storm is coming, it is definitely comparable to anticipating an emotionally devastating breakdown... you can smell it in the air... You can feel it in your bones...

This song portrays the intensely haunting feeling that lingers in the air when heartbreak has just been endured. "Feels Like Rain" is a metaphor for the fear of impending emotional doom after true love has been taken away. When the most important relationship of a lifetime comes to an end, the heartache that follows is the "storm to come".
