Verse 1
I grew up in Nebraska,
In a time of simpler ways.
Summers were spent on my family?s farm,
We?d play in the fields all day.
Or some time?s we?d spend the day,
At a lake not far away.
We walked through the snow in winter-time,
To a school about a mile away.
Though our life was a simple one,
We never dreamed of any other way,
I grew up in Nebraska that way.
Verse 2
The greatest fear we ever knew,
Was what the Christian?s say.
Hell and God?s damnation,
Made us fear life everyday.
But somehow I seemed to know,
That there had to be a better way.
For if God really loved us so,
He wouldn?t treat us in that way.
You know I think I grew a little,
On that cold Nebraska day,
When I started to think about God & life that way.
Verse 3
When they found the Cuban missiles,
We knelt and began to pray.
You know I think that we all thought,
We?d be dead by the following day.
When they shot John Kennedy,
Time seemed to stop that day.
I think we were so shocked,
We couldn?t even pray.
A little part of all of us died,
On that cold November day,
All of Nebraska grew a little that day.
Verse 4
Then my father?s job was changed,
And we had to move away.
It wasn?t long before I was headed for a war,
Half the world away.
Ever since I?ve been back home,
I?ve lived near the Monterey Bay.
Even though I?ve traveled the world,
I?d just like to say.
I don?t think a day?s gone by,
That I haven?t thought in some way,
That I?d like to return to Nebraska someday.
I don?t think a day?s gone by,
That I haven?t thought in some way,
That I?d like to return to Nebraska someday.
