Lyrics

A Little Note

She's a waitress down at Joe's Bar
In the evening the locals come 'round
From the factory, from the motel
They start drinking and they never slow down

She checks her make up in the bedroom mirror
She tries to smooth away the bruises on her skin
But her hand is steady as she writes the letter
And her eyes are clear as she gazes up again

CH:
Time to get on that highway
She's leaving it all behind
The booze and the bottle and the busted dreams
And a little note telling him goodbye
And a little note telling him goodbye

She goes driving down the dark streets
While the town sleeps she heads out alone
She keeps looking back at that suitcase
She keeps hidden with her shoes and some clothes

She's been hiding in their kitchen
Fixing his dinners for so many years
She quit trying to stop his drinking
'Cause it's his strong hand she has learned to fear

CH:
Time to get on that highway
She's leaving it all behind
The shame and the secrets and the things she should have said
In a little note telling him goodbye
In a little note telling him... goodbye

SOLOS

BR:
By now he's shouting for his dinner, but the table lays bare
Passed out with his six pack on the living room chair
And she' s flying down the road and she don't know where
But the sweet Kentucky wind is blowing through her hair.

CH:
Time to get on the highway
She's got a life to find
She's got miles of highway
And a blue sky all her own
And right now she feels like she can fly
And right now she feels like she can fly
