You Don't Know Me

Story Behind The Song

Where do these songs come from? I was starting to finish another song when this one popped out and insisted on being attended to. Have you ever been in a relationship (friendship, familial, romantic) where you feel completely unseen for who you really are? I had to laugh when the line "there's a rumor in the mill there's a Jack for every Jill" appeared. What? Really? OK - if you insist. Then, while laying down the initial track, my patient producer, Bill, and I created the tag and somehow the line "Don't wait up, Jack" inserted itself, thus closing the door on the elusive Jack search.

Lyrics

V1: You don't know me - you think you do
You've mistaken me for someone you once knew
She was kinder - more naive
She saw only what she wanted to see

Cho: I'm not that lady - I'm not that girl
Don't know where she is in this world
Don't expect me to tell you where she's at
Don't hold your breath - she's not coming back

V2: You don't know me anymore
The girl you knew walked out your door
Long ago - I'm surprised you didn't see
Maybe you just didn't want to believe

Cho:

Bridge: There's a rumor in the mill
There's a Jack for every Jill
Well, if that's true, then where is mine?
Sometimes I think I see his face
But he turns and runs away
Like I'm running, running out of time

V3: You don't know me - don't pretend
You're my oldest and dearest friend
If you can't see it, then who can?
Does anybody know who I am?

Cho: I'm not that lady - I'm not that girl
Don't know where she's gone in this world
Don't expect me to tell you where she's at
Don't hold your breath - don't wait up, Jack
She's far away now - she won't be coming back
