Let Me Go

Story Behind The Song

This song emerged fully formed one morning as I sat in the "music room" of my place in California. I wasn't trying to write a song and almost resented having to take the time to do so (will I ever learn?). But the song won out over my natural inertia and turned into a plea for forgiveness to enable one to move on when a relationship ends. In fact, my favorite line is "There's a word for letting go of the past and I think it's called forgiveness." It takes two to get together and it takes two to break apart. The song lent itself to an acoustic feel and it just so happened that Bill Bentley was practicing his finger-picking at the time so Bill produced/performed an instrumental track that perfectly fit the song and let him show off his fingers!

Lyrics

Let Me Go

V1: Got a phone call just the other day
Your name came up in the conversation
I was instantly swept away
Back to when I was the object of your affection
I let you in - I let you see
Who I'd been and who I hoped to be
I let you down - that we know
But did you have to let me go?
Let me go - oh, let me go

V2: So I started singing songs you wrote
During the time we were together
As I went through them note-by-note
I wondered why it's not forever
You gave me hope - you let me dream
You showed me beauty like I'd never seen
The only thing I still don't know
Why'd you have to let me go?
Let me go - you let me go

V3: There's a word for letting go of the past
And I think it's called forgiveness
I've been told all you have to do is ask
Can't you see, that's what this is?
If you could look me in the eyes
And listen while I apologize
You might be able to forgive me so
Maybe I could let you go
Let you go - I'll let you go
