If I Haven't Learned By Now

Story Behind The Song

My brother, Scott, writes plays and, in attending his many plays, I had the privilege of getting to know some of the folks who are involved in the theatre group that perform them. One of those folks is Terry Riggle, who is not only an actress but a director as well. She had roles in many of Scott's plays, including some of the musicals that Scott and I created together. After the last performance of one of those musicals, I got an email from Terry with some musings she'd put together and which she offered to me since "you might actually do something with them." Her musings lay dormant in my mind for a while until, one day, I began musing myself about the irony of having to learn the same lessons over and over in life. I'd looked at Terry's words often but hadn't had the right opportunity to incorporate them into one of my songs. Well, you guessed it - this time, her words struck a chord (so to speak) and the last verse of this song is pretty much what Terry had sent me. Thank you, my friend, for your patience in seeing your thoughts come to life.

Lyrics

If I Haven't Learned By Now

V1: If I let you down, I'm sorry
I let me down as well
I tried to keep my distance
I swore I wouldn't tell
Well we know how that turned out
Secrets I can't keep
Now I'm alone again
With hours to go before I sleep

Cho: If I haven't learned by now I'm afraid I never will
What's it gonna take to make the lesson real?
Gotta listen to my heart, pay attention to my soul
(1) If I'd done that from the start I'd have never let you go
(2) If I'd only played it smart, I'd have never let you go
(3) If I'd only learned my lesson, I would have never let you go

V2: There's a letter I've written
Tucked inside a book
It reads like a confession
About a chance I never took
I spend every day regretting
The path I didn't take
Wish I could be getting
Smarter from mistakes I make

Cho:

V3: You say you understand
And everything's alright
It's all part of some plan
I should just sleep on it tonight
Tomorrow's another day
You say that much is true
But if you think that I'm okay
Who's really kidding who?
