I Rest My Case

Story Behind The Song

The more stages we experience in life, the more we realize that life is experiencing us at the same time. This song was written as a result of the same break-up that inspired so many of my songs (hey, at least he was good for one thing....). I threw in the phrase "God bless my soul" more because it seemed like the right phrase to use rather than because I really meant God bless my soul. But, listening back to it, I can see how some might view this as a kind of inspirational, devotional song, which is why it shows up on my devotional album, "In the Presence of Grace." Bill McKinney did a great job at arranging and recording this and joined the phenomenal Pat Schrein on background vocals.

Lyrics

I REST MY CASE

Remember the night I so righteously gave this advice
There could be no happiness without sacrifice
Little did I know then those words were aimed straight at me
I thought I was so wise to see what any fool could see
Well, now I see

And I rest my case, God bless my soul
I risked it all to grab the whole
Hoping to find a better place
It took its toll, God bless my soul, I rest my case

Taking the safe and sure highway was never my style
But would it have been such a sin to just stay awhile
And now I'm looking back with such bittersweet delight
Since it no longer matters which one was wrong and which was right
At least not tonight

I rest my case, God bless my soul
I risked it all to grab the whole
Hoping to find a better place
It took its toll, God bless my soul, I rest my case

Even knowing what my life would one day bring
I don't believe I'd change a single thing
'Cause every step has brought me to this place
I hear your voice -- I see your face
I rest my case

And now my words are coming back to me
There's none so blind as one who will not see
Well, now I see

And I rest my case, God bless my soul
I risked it all to grab the whole
Hoping to find a better place
It took its toll, God bless my soul, I rest my case
I rest my case, that's all I know
No looking back, just letting go
Now that I found a better place
It took its toll, God bless my soul
I risked it all to grab the whole
It took its toll, God bless my soul
I rest my case.
