Brick by Brick

Story Behind The Song

I read an article written by a woman who was explaining how her life was built brick by brick - how she drew from some unknown inner strength to take on the role of provider, nurturer, protector, and caregiver. Basically, she was describing the life of a single mom. The phrase "brick-by-brick" stuck and, hence, this song appeared. I've been in that position and found strength I never knew I had and, sometimes, didn't even want to have to have. Hail to those who have faced the challenge and survived!

Lyrics

V1: Call me a freak of nature - a loner if you will
Yeah, I took on the role of Jack and added that to my Jill
I didn't plan on being supergirl and superman
Well, as we know, life doesn't go as planned
With noone to lean on - all by myself
I stepped up to the plate - there was nobody else
With mouths to feed and bills to pay
It fell to me to save the day

Cho: Brick-by-brick I built this life of mine
Step-by-step
Taking one day at a time
Just to get
Closer to the finish line
Hoping to find
Some kind of happiness and peace of mind

V2: I didn't know I could be so strong - I never wanted to be
But all the responsibility fell to me
Someone had to be the one to tow the line
I didn't volunteer but the job became mine
With no place to run and nowhere to hide
And noone standing by my side
There was no time to think about how scared I really felt
You don't deal the cards - you just play the cards you're dealt

Cho:

V3: So what do you do when there's only you"
The answer is clear - whatever you have to do
One day you wake up and you realize
Your life is a house of bricks built on compromise
