Tennessee

Story Behind The Song

I moved from Tennessee to Cleveland Ohio and got married. After 7 years of marriage, I ended up divorced, alone, with no family within 5 hundred miles. I desperately wanted to ho back to Tennessee, but I had a son, who was about 5 at the time, and he loved both his parents. Taking him with me wouldn't be fair to him. Leaving him here without me was NOT an option. So I stayed, but have dreamed about going home for all these years.

Lyrics

Tennessee

V1
I stood on my front porch on a cold December night
And listened to the sounds of the city rushing by
My eyes filled with tears as the thought occurred to me
My body might be here but my hearts in Tennessee
Chorus
In Tennessee theres a dirt road that leads back to my home
And every night I go there in my sleep
And in my dreams I see my momma cry and beg me not to go
Lord I'd give anything To be in Tennessee
V2
Well I thought of all the wasted years and all the broken dreams
I thought of all I left behind the day I chose to leave
I thought I knew it all back then, now its so clear to me
If I could do it all again I stay in Tennessee
Tag
If I die before I make it lay me high upon a hill
And carve these words into my stone
Here lie's a man whose final wish has been fulfilled
Lord, he finally made it home.
