Story Behind The Song
More often than not, when we think of some of the best patriotic music of the past few decades--and certainly in the post 9/11 world-- the default genre that comes to mind is country. Singer, songwriter and producer Don Preach aims to change all that, creating a whole new category called "urban patriotic" with the upcoming release of his album My American Dream. In 2008, he and his executive producer and long time friend, Jack Shirk launched Stealth Mode Entertainment to release and promote this groundbreaking project.
Preach is a veteran hip hop and gospel performer who was signed several years ago to 805 Music (Stevie B's label) and performed gospel rap onstage with popular groups like the Grammy nominated Christian rap group Gospel Gangstaz. After working in this end of the industry for several years, he realized that his ultimate creative dreams lay in a different realm. The challenge was to find his own voice and channel his experiences to create a project that was spiritual yet mainstream. Recently, his relationship with Stevie B came full circle when he produced the R&B/Latin singer's single "It's Not Over."
Preach had been working on a different solo project called Positively Dangerous in Nashville when he met J.R. Martinez, a young American soldier who had suffered severe burns when the Humvee he was driving hit a land mine. Preach and Martinez, who has told his harrowing story on a various Television shows including Oprah and The View, began to build a friendship. Preach, inspired by what has happened wrote the song "Hero", dedicating the song to J.R. Martinez and all the other veterans of war, particularly those of IRAQ who have suffered life challenging injuries. "Hero" which is currently available on ITunes, has taken on a life of its own and is beginning to spread in popularity with the Military and Non Profit war related associations through out the United States.
