Now And Then

Story Behind The Song

I was inspired to write this by the Beatles' Norwegian Wood.

Song Description

A guy is led to believe that a girl really likes him until the phone rings. He is distraught and, after she abruptly leaves her place, pours her wine into the hot tub. He reflects on how things were then and how they are now.

Lyrics

I found out the difference between now and yesterday.
We were a couple then, now I'm alone today.
That was the happiest time I have known.
You said your hot tub was great for us to unwind.
Once in the water, we held each other so tight.
Things were just great till the ring from your phone.

Now and then I feel the moments.
Once in love and now in torments.
It's a roller-coaster ride inside my head.
Then it was a great love story
Now I feel so lost and lonely
Wondering what changed between now and then.

I was surprised at how quickly you left your place.
Watching you, there was no remorse upon your face.
I sat too broken to finish my wine.
I poured your glass in the hot tub just for kicks.
Bubbles and red wine made a strange, confusing mix.
Sorta like what was going on in my mind.

Now and then I feel the moments.
Once in love and now in torments.
It's a roller-coaster ride inside my head.
Then it was a great love story
Now I feel so lost and lonely
Wondering what changed between now and then.

It didn't last long, but you're still on my mind.
I had great plans when our love was alive.
I'm trying to figure out what went wrong.
We made such sweet music till you changed the song.

Now and then I feel the moments.
Once in love and now in torments.
I can't stop replaying in my head.
Then it was a great love story
Now trying to move on and maybe
Someday soon, I'll think of you just now and then.

I really enjoy conversational songs and this one has touches of being confessional, chronologically thinking about what happened to a love that had gone wrong. Somehow the "hot tub" line sticks with me because it's something I had not heard in a song before, and something different often gives a song a good unique kick! It has a terrific conclusion with "someday I'll think of you just now and then," much like David Gates' conclusion in "Lost Without Your Love" with "Someday my heart won't have to break." The tune itself is easy to follow, instruments are very well chosen, played impeccably well, and fit the mood. It would fit well on any folk album.
