Story Behind The Song
Wanted to write a wistful song about leaving a small town and finding out that I couldn't go back to it or back to who I was as a person.
Song Description
A guy (or could be a gal) raised in a small town doesn't find there the companion he seeks in life. Leaves town and finds her. Goes back to the town to see what his life might've been like if he'd stayed. He can't go back; it's not the same without her. He's also been changed by her so he can't go back to who he was.

Lyrics
Was raised not too far
From a honky-tonk bar.
In a one stop-light town
With charm all around.
No one locked their doors
Cloth awnings on stores
My childhood was fun
And I knew everyone.
Thoughts of that town and my youth Could apply most anywhere.
It's a very nice place, but, in truth, I can't go back without a care.
In that little world
Gave dating a whirl.
But still could not find
Who I had in mind
I turned twenty one
Without finding my love.
Left that place behind
And found you in time
In my youth, I loved that town, It was just beyond compare.
But returning would be sad, in truth, I can't go back without you there.
I can't go back to who I was before you,
And for that I'm so blessed, you bring out my very best.
Took a trip to see
How my life might be
If I had not roamed
And left where I called home.
That town lost its star
Can't drink at the bar
Or stop at the light
Without you on my mind.
Thoughts of that town and my youth Could apply most anywhere.
But returning would be sad, in truth, I can't go back without you there,
I can't go back without you there.
