Locally Famous (Widely Unknown)

Story Behind The Song

This song was inspired by a trip to the VA hospital to visit my grandpa before he passed away. One day as I was going in to see Grandpa at the VA, I ran into a man sitting in a wheel chair, who had lost both his legs. He noticed I had a guitar on my back and asked me, "Can you sing me Amazing Grace?" I figured, "why not", so I said ok and played and sang Amazing Grace. When I finished he thanked me very kindly and I shook his hand. then I went inside to visit Grandpa. A week or so later I went to visit grandpa again and this time that guy in the wheelchair was not there but I ran into a male nurse who stopped me and said, "What did you say to that guy in the wheelchair last time you were here?". I simply told him about how he had asked me to sing Amazing Grace and so I sang it for him and that was it. Then he said, "Wow that really is Amazing, becuase that guy had had his legs blown off in a horrible incident in the Persian Gulf. He was so traumatized by it that he suffered from post traumatic stress disorder and from the day of the incident hadn't spoken one word. His first words since the incident were, "Can you sing me Amazing Grace?". Life is all about the little things. Being a star isn't about the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. It's about making a difference in people's hearts. Sometimes that means one heart at a time. So I don't mind being Locally Famous and Widely Unknown.

Locally Famous
Written by Scott Wilcox © August 14, 2009

Locally Famous, widely unknown
It's ok cause I don't mind being needed close to home
Locally Famous, widely askew
It's okay cause I don't mind staying right here close to you

I walked in to Wal-mart, a guy shakes my hand (and he says)
That song you played last night made my wife get up and dance
See, she wasn't feeling well, lost her will to fight
But after that song you played she said everything'll be alright

Chorus

I went to the VA, to visit my grandpa
I met a man who lost his legs in the Persian Gulf War
I sang him a little song called Amazing Grace
you would have thought I was Willie Nelson by the smile on his face.

(But I'm) Locally Famous, widely unknown
It's ok, cause I don't mind being needed close to home
Locally Famous, widely askew
It's okay cause I don't mind staying right here close to you

Bridge

When I was a young boy, I dreamt to be a star,
But now I know, to change the world, you don't have to go that far.

Chorus
