Continuity

Continuity may well turn out to be a career-defining record for Wedlock, and not just because of Indie Of The Year 2009. This work seems more flowing, smoother and more swaying than their others - probably due to their being able to actually sit down and write. Electropop is still on it's way up, and they have managed to get a fresh sound out of the movement, akin to a lighter Depeche Mode. The main thing that strikes me about this is the seemingly endless creativity of the beats. There's a different toe-tap to every track, sometimes two of three and this really helps to give the music a point of difference. Electro-pop is hard to do originally, mainly because artists tend to fall back on tried-and-tested beats and instrumentation but Jeff and Paul are clearly masters of the art as well as the craft - the cascading synths and overlapping electronic handclaps are perfectly placed. This review wouldn't be complete without a little section on Paul Allgood's voice as well - it's the centrepiece of the whole album this time and it serves them well, pinning the sound down and making it even more danceable. The scope of this seems to cover quite a few electro bases - trippy house beats run over slippy disco and it's certainly cutting edge stuff. It needs a little polish still - parts of the sound are (as yet) undeveloped and unexplored, but that's the beauty of acts like Wedlock - room to grow. If such a thing as avant garde were ever possible in electro, they just might have done it. 4/5. --September 2009, Emmy-Music Emissions
