You Should Know

You Should Know is the culmination of an intense, unhurried studio experience, tapping the complex talent of Gordon Vincent with his rock, folk, blues, and R&B influences. Co-producer Mike Kearns says, “Our goal was to help Gordon nail the unique flavor of each song that was lurking in his brain. Not too fancy but not too basic: let his musical imagination run free. Sometimes drums worked, but on many songs it had to be percussion, to give it that earthy feel. On “Too short to be a man”, Gordon asked for real pots and pans, so Kathy Burkly played real pots and pans. “Nobody but myself to blame” didn’t come together until she gave it the djembe pulse. You might not realize, Gordon played all the guitars on this CD, acoustic and electric. He’s very innovative on electric — he found great sounds for “Deconstruction baby” and “You should know”, then the parts emerged. Check out the bass Gordon plays on “Always alone” which I nicknamed ‘the mournful elephant.’ Gordon and his brother Chris recorded “I can’t be your boy” in one night of fevered creativity — it’s a total slam dunk. On the whole CD, all the musicians played great, delivered what the songs needed.”
