Beth Wimmer was born and raised in the United States, where she recorded her first album. Nowadays, she has her base in Switzerland. At the end of last year her fourth album "Bookmark" came in, where nine of the ten songs are her own compositions. There is also a surprising cover of Bowies 'Starman' which has no difficulty in fitting into the context that is americana.
It happens that a single favorite of a particular album changes over time, which is often proof for the overall quality of the album. A good example is Mary Karr and Rodney Crowell's album 'Kin'. "Bookmark" is such an album. Ever since December, I've listened to these songs virtually every day and marvel at what I hear, what class these recordings hold, lyrics, arrangements, fantasy and joy. The titles are often short and concise; 'Louisiana', 'Bookmark', 'Mexico', but the lyrics are all the more meaningful. The songs each carry their own themes and remind you a lot about short stories. Beth Wimmer also writes innovative texts with her very own expression. An example is the opening line of 'Louisiana'; I'm tired of my tears dropping like rotten apples from a tree... by the way, one of the best songs of the record.
'Bookmark' is produced by Beth and Billy Watts, who, together with his colleagues in Mojo Monkeys, Taras Prodaniuk and David Raven, strongly contributes innovative arrangements that effectively support the often dreamy, humorous and playful stories. A good example is "Mexico", right now my favorite.
"Bookmark" is an incredibly good album. If Beth Wimmer comes to Sweden you will find me at the front.
