Lyrics
Acanthostega Blues
©2008 Stephen M. Baird, M.D.
Well, my grandpa was a swimmer Repeat
In the old Devonian sea.
Now I?ve got toes and fingers
Where grandad?s flippers used to be.
Grandpa crawled upon the shoreline Repeat
Where his gills did him no good
And he had no lungs for breathing
Like all terrestrial creatures should.
He looked around for competition Repeat
Seeing none, it eased his fears.
Took his time evolving breathing -
About a hundred million years.
Grandpa waddled on the shoreline; Repeat
Didn?t have too wide a range
From his fins to feet with tootsies
Took him eons more to change.
We call him Acanthostega ? Repeat
The Columbus of his day.
Didn?t know where he was going,
But he?s why we?re here today.
CODA:
Didn?t know where he was going,
But he?s why we?re here today.
