Story Behind The Song
I got the idea for this song after reading a newspaper article about a Swedish academic who decided to try and formalize the steps to spiritual development a human being could take during their life. He came up with six steps - the last step being that of attaining the godhead. Not too many of us get that far.
After examining my own journey up to this point I realized that I had gone through several distinct steps. That's when the idea for the song happened. It starts out with a boy - unaware of god or any connection he might have with him. The journey is one of finding and awakening the god within us and there are many difficulties to overcome along the way before we can achieve this. In the end we realize who we really are - it's like waking up from a dream and remembering...
"...I knew it all the along
Oh I played with my toys
When God was just a boy"

Lyrics
When God Was Just A Boy
When I was a boy
God was just a toy
Sitting on a shelf
And I was playing on the floor
Not wondering if there's more
If god was keeping score
I was only a boy
And god was just a toy
And in my thirteenth year
I was taught to fear
God in all his splendor
And I was forced to swear
That I would always wear
His cross upon my heart
I was only thirteen
And learned that god was fear
Then I became a man
I put god on the stand
And somehow found him wanting
And I called him to testify
I told him he had lied
That was the day he died
Oh I was such a young man
The year I put god on trial
And then my world began
To wake up
To shake up
The whole thing was all makeup
Who do we turn to
When we cry alone at night?
And then one day I found
My world was upside down
The whole thing inside out
And I realized they'd lied
I laughed until I cried
That was the day I died
Oh my world turned around
My feet were on the ground
When I was a boy
God was just a toy
Sitting on a shelf
Oh I never thought too far
Or wondered what we are
But I knew it all the along
Oh I played with my toys
When God was just a boy
